The Cavaquinho in the Azores
By Nuno Cristo

IIntroduction:
The presence of a string instrument named “cavaquinho” in the Azorean archipelago is still a subject very much under studied. Known and built there perhaps since the middle 19th century, it never attained a great degree of popularity among the population of the islands, unconditionally devoted to another chordophone, the viola de arame (multi-coursed folk guitar). The first field researches organized in the 1950s revealed that it was rare the practice of the “cavaquinho” in the Azores, nevertheless today it seems that there is a growing interest on the instrument, using it in groups of regional/urban music in the various islands. The makers also have restarted the local production of “cavaquinhos.”
