Cavaquinho Azores

The Cavaquinho in the Azores: a preliminary historical-cultural study

Nuno Cristo

The presence of an instrument known as the “cavaquinho” in the archipelago of the Ilhas de Bruma (Misty Islands) is a subject that has not yet been studied. Known and built there perhaps since the middle of the 19th century, it has never achieved great popularity among the Azorean people, unconditional devotees of another chordophone, the wire guitar. The first field surveys carried out from the 1950s onwards reveal that the practice of the cavaquinho was rare in the Azores, although currently there seems to be a growing interest in the instrument, which is integrated into regional/urban music groups on various islands. The builders have also resumed the local production of cavaquinhos. Read more.
