National Collective Exhibition
70 Cavaquinhos 70 Artists

Exhibition 70 Cavaquinhos 70 Artists

At the Jerónimos Monastery, in Lisbon, on November 27th, 2015, the national and itinerant collective exhibition - 70 Cavaquinhos 70 Artists, produced by the Cavaquinho Museum, was inaugurated. It was open to the public for five weeks and had 43,000 visits.

Since its creation, the Association has had the support of renowned visual artists, including Pedro Cabrita Reis, Júlio Pomar and Julião Sarmento. This connection gave rise to the idea of producing an exhibition, with the Association inviting 70 artists - most of them young creators - from various parts of the country, offering each of them a cavaquinho as a support for plastic intervention.

Its preparation was made possible through the initial sponsorship of the semi-industrial musical instrument factory - APC -, which was joined by the artisanal factory - Artimúsica - and eleven individual artisans: Alfredo Machado, António Faria Vieira, António Monteiro, Carlos Jorge Pereira Rodrigues, Domingos Machado, Fernando Meireles, José Gonçalves, Mário Estalisnau, Mário Eugénio de Sousa, Nuno Russel and Víctor Félix who built the remaining cavaquinhos to be used by the visual artists. The exhibition space was designed by Salomé Nascimento.

To date, the exhibition has been held in the following cities: Braga - Theatro-Circo, Coimbra - City Hall, Viana do Castelo - Museu do Traje (Costume Museum), Guimarães - Vila Flor Palace, Barcelos - Gothic Salon at City Hall, Casto Marim - Casa do Sal (Salt House), Funchal - Main Hall of the Municipal Theater Baltazar Dias, Santa Maria da Feira - Cineteatro António Lamoso, Pombal - Museum of Portuguese Popular Art, Porto - Arrábidashopping, Montreux / Switzerland - MAG, Contemporary Art Hall.

The 70 CAVAQUINHOS 70 ARTISTS EXHIBITION is part of a set of activities that the AC Museu Cavaquinho promotes in order to raise awareness among the population of the rich heritage of this instrument and its practice.
